Basic virtualization provides customers a fundamentally new level of cost efficiency and agility in delivering IT services. Customers have embraced the capabilities of virtualization to move beyond the highly manual and expensive delivery model of physical infrastructure.
While the virtualized infrastructure is more agile than before, IT teams, with fewer staff and tighter budgets, struggle with high frequency, low governance preproduction requests. They simply cannot manually provision virtual infrastructure on underutilized hardware to cover every request from the business. Frustrated end users end up satisfying their demand for quick access to services with proprietary ungoverned public cloud providers.
More than ever before, IT also needs the security and control necessary to meet enterprise requirements. Cloud infrastructure enables multiple teams, organizations, or business units to all securely consume isolated resources from a common, scalable, and shared infrastructure. The scale and change-awareness required to deliver cloud infrastructure can be challenging to meet using traditional approaches to delivering infrastructure. As businesses grow, it may not be feasible for IT to continue to manually provision virtual infrastructure on underutilized hardware to cover every request from the business.
Enterprise IT has a unique opportunity to address these challenges and deliver this increased business agility by delivering cloud infrastructure in the datacenter without compromising security or control.
Fundamentally, IT needs to overcome these three challenges to amplify the benefits of virtualization and increase agility:
1.Underutilized infrastructure distributed in siloes across the enterprise
2.Complex, custom, and inflexible application stacks that lock IT services to
hardware and require unrepeatable and rigid maintenance processes
3.Manual provisioning to enforce the governance and control needed to meet enterprise
requirements
Yo amplify the benefits of virtualization and increase agility, enterprises are starting to implement private clouds. A private cloud based on VMware’s Private Cloud solution delivers three unique capabilities to the enterprise
•An efficient and secure approach to using shared infrastructure for
servicing highly frequent requests
•A standardized, portable, extensible approach to enable workloads to
be deployed without manual configuration and across multiple clouds
•Agile access to shared infrastructure so workloads can be provisioned
on demand

Rely on the Most Efficient, Agile, and Extensible Cloud Infrastructure
As the proven leader in virtualization, VMware is charting the course to deliver
unprecedented efficiency, agility, and extensibility with the private cloud.
Working in concert with industry leaders, VMware is helping enterprises gain
the benefits of cloud computing leveraging existing investments without compromising
control.
The VMware Private Cloud Solution introduces new abstractions, similar to those available with vSphere, to take virtualization to the datacenter level. IT services are delivered as fully encapsulated and portable multi-virtual-machine units called vApps. These vApps can be stored in catalog libraries and migrated to any VMware compatible cloud. End-user consumption is controlled and governed through both role-based access policies tied to organization constructs as well as unique virtual networking technologies that enable similar virtual machine environments to be deployed concurrently
"[VMware’s] deep expertise in virtualization and cloud technologies helped us significantly accelerate the design and build of our internal private cloud solution. With IT efficiency seen as the most compelling driver of cloud adoption, it’s no surprise that VMware is the vendor most closely associated with this emerging computing environment. "

Deliver Infrastructure as a Service with Security
The VMware Private Cloud Solution pools infrastructure resources among multiple
clusters into policy-based virtual datacenters. A virtual datacenter is a predefined
container of resources that spans a set of virtualized physical resources that
can be can be constructed to provide specific service-levels or meet particular
business needs. These elastic and tiered virtual datacenters enable resources
to be provisioned to IT services without repeated configuration. By logically
pooling infrastructure
capacity into virtual datacenters, IT organizations can manage resources more
efficiently with complete abstraction between the delivery of infrastructure
and the underlying hardware that supports it.
VMware solutions also enable your virtual infrastructure to be secured and continuously monitored for compliance drift. VMware’s security technology enables trust-zone policies to be applied on the Private Cloud to protect and control traffic to IT-governed groups of virtual machines. VMware’s configuration management products also enable continuous monitoring of the virtual environment to detect potential incidents and failures that can take the environment out of compliance.
Make your Cloud Infrastructure Secure and Compliant
Make your datacenter secure and compliant at every level: host, network, applications,
data and endpoint. The unique introspection capabilities of VMware virtualization
and its change-aware software plus our large network of partners give you comprehensive
security and compliance with the flexibility for fast and dynamic reconfiguration
of resources across datacenters.
VMware has cost-effective and adaptive security services and tools to let you build a trusted cloud infrastructure. Eliminate your patchwork of security solutions and use a single policy framework for deploying and managing security services from VMware as well as third parties. Ensure that applications and data in the cloud—private, public or hybrid—can be segmented for compliance, with different trust levels for different applications.
Enabling Standardization and Portability
Standardization is central to achieving much greater operational efficiency.
Private clouds not only facilitate standardization but dramatically increase
the returns on standardization. VMware Private Cloud Solution leverage open
standards such as the Open Virtualization Format (OVF) to enable packaging and
migration of workloads across clouds. By encapsulating multi virtual-machine
services and the associated networking policies into vApps, these portable units
can be stored in catalogs and flexibly deployed into any virtual datacenter
available to the enterprise. This enables end users of one cloud to easily share
services with end users of another and enables IT to easily migrate services
between clouds. Custom extensions and the open Private Cloud API allow existing
systems in the datacenter to be integrated with the private cloud so you can
customize your cloud to your unique business requirements.
Consuming Infrastructure as a Service with Agility
Pooling of infrastructure and portability of services combine to enable uniquely
agile access to IT services. VMware’s Private Cloud solution enables end
users to deploy services and consume resources on demand through both a Web
portal and a programmatic interface. End users store their most frequently used
vApp configurations in catalogs that enable sharing and collaboration among
users in an organization. At deployment time, the VMware Private Cloud solution
can automatically detect provisioning of a vApp template that has already been
deployed and rapidly provision a clone using unique VMware linked clone technology.
These capabilities get end users the fastest access to infrastructure.
Faster provisioning is great but not if it means compromising security or unauthorized access to resources. Many surveys on cloud computing cite security as the most significant concern hindering the adoption of cloud computing. VMware’s approach to virtual networking and security leverages a unique host-based traffic introspection technology that is distributed throughout the infrastructure. This host-based distributed architecture enables virtual networks to be protected at the host level, leading to lower overall costs and higher quality of service. VMware’s security technology is also change-aware, enabling you to leverage dynamic capabilities such as live migration while being assured that the security policies remain intact and follow virtual machines seamlessly.
Automated provisioning also requires control to ensure compliance with appropriate access policies. VMware enables two approaches to achieving automated control over resources. One approach controls the consumption of resources by users before the resources are provisioned either through request/approval workflow or quotes/limits on what can be provisioned. An alternative approach freely allows end users to consume resources from the infrastructure but observes this consumption to generate usage reports. Those usage reports can then have cost models applied to them to generate cost reports that display the cost of the consumption. Thus, VMware’s technology enables you to amplify your datacenter without compromising control or governance.

Obtain Agility with Policy-Driven Automation
VMware’s policy-driven approach to abstraction enables a unique degree
of efficiency and acceleration for IT administrators. Resource management policies
can improve utilization of shared infrastructure by allowing resources to be
overcommitted beyond baseline reservations. Multi-cluster linked clone technology
enables identical virtual machine configurations to be provisioned rapidly and
without a full duplication of the original VM template. Resource pooling and
virtual distributed network configuration reduce the amount of hardware needed
to deliver services, and enable intelligent policy management mechanisms like
distributed resource scheduling and VMware vMotion. Software controls can enforce
isolation that minimizes the risk of a user-driven or system-driven fault.
With this unique policy-driven automation in place, you are able to essentially deliver zero-touch infrastructure, where IT is transformed into a service provider defining and delivering services rather than operationally responding to custom requests.
Retain Freedom of Choice
VMware's technology lets you build your cloud at your own pace without the need
to re-architect your existing applications. As an out-of-the-box solution, VMware’s
Private Cloud solution runs on top of your existing vSphere enabled resources.
Open standards like the Open Virtualization Format (OVF) and the Private Cloud
API ensure that the investment you make in your private cloud does not lock
you into a specific deployment model. VMware gives you complete freedom of choice
as to how to deploy workloads in your cloud.
